Colliery Training College celebrates 60 years
The Colliery Training College (CTC) has been a cornerstone of the South African skills development landscape since its establishment in 1965. For six decades, CTC has been renowned as a premier provider of engineering and mining qualifications based in Emalahleni. Over the past 60 years, CTC has played an indispensable role in equipping generations of individuals with the knowledge, expertise, and safety consciousness necessary to thrive in demanding industries. As the college proudly marks this significant milestone, it is an opportunity to reflect on its rich history, acknowledge its significant contributions, and explore the comprehensive range of training programmes that continue to shape the future of various sectors in the country.
Established in response to the growing need for skilled personnel within the burgeoning coal mining industry, CTC initially focused on providing foundational training in core mining disciplines. Over the years, the college has evolved and adapted to the dynamic needs of the mining and other sectors, expanding its curriculum to encompass a diverse array of specialised programmes that cater to various roles and responsibilities within mining and engineering operations.
Today, CTC offers a comprehensive range of artisan training programmes, including legacy trades (owing to the phasing out of which, learners registered in these qualifications must complete them by June 30, 2027) and occupational qualification trades. Training integrates knowledge, practical application, and workplace experience, encompassing specific skills training and specialised industry-aligned short courses.
The occupational qualifications trades offered by CTC include Transportation Electrician (auto electrician), Diesel Mechanic, Electrician, Instrument Mechanician, Metal Machinist, Welder, Boilermaker, Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Mechanical Fitter, Fitter and Turner, Rigger, and Millwright.
Committed to fostering a highly skilled and innovative workforce, CTC empowers individuals through its high-quality, industry-aligned training programmes. CTC offers a range of registered skills programmes and specialised customer-aligned short courses which include Artisan Aide programmes, Medium Voltage (Switching), Gas Testing, and Flameproofing – maintenance of flameproof equipment (engineering), Working at Heights, Scaffolding Erector and Inspector training programme, Advanced Hydraulics, Wireman’s License, MV Cable Jointing, Automotive Air Conditioning, and Solar Commercial PV design and Compliance with PV, as well as registered mining skills programmes such as Blasting Assistant for Surface Excavations, Competent Person A for surface excavations, Blasting Assistant for underground mining, and Fall of Ground Competent A and B for underground coal mining. These short courses equip trainees with industry-aligned skills, and the registered skills programmes earn credits on the National Qualifications Framework towards a full qualification. These programmes are key to addressing critical skills needs, developing specific competencies, and cultivating a culture of accountability. Further, CTC offers a valuable candidate screening service to its customers.
CTC provides full qualifications in underground mining, surface excavations and mineral processing. Following the completion of basic training modules, students can progress to a range of full qualifications such as a Blasting Certificate, Continuous Miner or Longwall Mining qualification, Opencast Blasting Certificate, or Rock Breaking/Surface Excavation Certificate. CTC’s mineral processing courses include both basic coal preparation for plant operators and advanced coal preparation for more senior mineral processing personnel. Notably, the underground mining training, previously situated at Thungela Greenside Colliery, has now relocated to Seriti Khutala Colliery.
Training is conducted at CTC’s state-of-the-art premises, which provides affordable student accommodation, a variety of recreational areas and a dining hall. CTC training is specifically designed to meet workplace demands, and its workshops and training rooms are staffed by skilled training officers who are specialists in their respective fields. Through its collaborative approach and close work with industry partners and stakeholders, CTC ensures that its curriculum remains relevant and up to date with the latest advancements in technology. This fosters continuous learning and develops a skilled workforce that prioritises safety, positively impacting the broader community.
CTC’s dedication to quality is evident in its numerous accreditations from esteemed bodies such as the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations, Mining Qualifications Authority, the Department of Higher Education and Training for Assessor and Moderator registrations, and the National Artisan Moderation Body. Further, CTC is ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certified, highlighting its dedication to both quality and occupational health and safety standards. These accreditations underscore CTC’s unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional training and assessment services.
CTC remains steadfast in its mission to equip individuals – from those just entering the workforce to seasoned professionals – with the essential engineering and mining skills required for successful careers. As a Level 1 Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment contributor, CTC is committed to driving industry growth while ensuring the safety of its students and the wider community. With its rich history, strong reputation and enduring commitment to excellence, CTC continues to evolve and is strategically positioned to remain a leader in skills development for many years to come.
